Meet the PhotographerS

2022 CWWR PhotographerS

We are pleased to announce Paula Mayer is returning this summer and will be lead CWWR official photographer. “Last summer I loved working as a team with Tenley. I hope we can create a collaborative cadre again this summer that includes photo students, past photographers, and local professionals.” -Paula

Thanks for all who contacted us and if you are interested in being a CWWR photographer in the future please reach out to us and we will keep your info in our files. We thank all of those who reached out and were interested in capturing the action and thrills of the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo.

In 2015, Paula rode out on horseback in search of wild mustangs in the San Luis Valley. Little did she know that this trip would change the course of her life. A native New Englander, this was her first exploration of the American West. And she never looked back.

“I am a visual story teller, capturing unvarnished moments as they unfold. I feel the tenets of American Western heritage are as important today as they were for our pioneer settlers. In rural communities, where much of the food we eat is farmed and raised, families rely on families in ways suburbanites can’t imagine. Finding common ground between a community’s needs and an individual’s sense of what’s right feels increasingly hard. Photography is my medium for creating the sense of community we all once relied on to survive.”

Hey there, I’m Brittany Gavegan.

I grew up competing in this arena running barrels, team roping and breakaway roping before moving to Arizona in 2017. I grew up going to rodeos as well as catching memories with my camera in hand. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to enhance my photography skills and I feel my skills have grown immensely. It feels great to be back at my old stomping grounds. Even if I am not competing in this awesome rodeo, I’m thrilled to be a part of it behind the lens. I look forward to escaping to the cool mountains for a few weeks this July and creating some magic behind the lens for you at the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo!

A fourth generation ranch kid from Maybell CO, Chelsee grew up raising and showing cattle. Today you can still find her on the ranch with her dog Finn.

While showing, Chelsee fell in love with the photography and marketing side of the business. Acquiring her first “real” camera after high school, she taught herself the tricks of the trade.

Nowadays she and Finn travel the Western US helping ranches market and sell their cattle.

‘Capturing moments has always been a passion of mine. Watching someone’s face light up when you show them the photos you took, in the moment, doing what they love – that’s what drives me. I started shooting professionally in 2017 and have worked for several different media companies before starting my own, Blacktimber Media. From flying in helicopters, to gun ranges with the United States Marshal Service Special Operations Group, I’ve got to travel and meet incredible people doing what I love. Now, I want to see what I can capture with rodeo. My family owns a ranch near Kim, CO and most of my friends either rodeo, manage a ranch, or are involved in that lifestyle in some way shape or form. I’m excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to get started!’

In 2015, Paula rode out on horseback in search of wild mustangs in the San Luis Valley. Little did she know that this trip would change the course of her life. A native New Englander, this was her first exploration of the American West. And she never looked back.

Paula and her husband moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2019 where they live on a small ranch. She enrolled in the Colorado Mountain College Professional Photography program and she specializes in landscapes, environmental portraiture and photojournalism. She is a regular contributor to the Sopris Sun.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tenley found her love for the mountains while taking annual family trips to Big Sky, Montana. “One day, I am going to live in the mountains,” she would say, again, and again. Among many things, she loves the outdoors, her camera, spending time with her dog (Bergen), riding her dirt bike, and has a passion for horses; she is one who was obsessed with horses when she was a little girl, and never grew out of it. With her relatives being heavily involved in the rodeo industry, she was exposed to what it entails, and jumps on every opportunity possible to bond with these amazing animals.

Starting at a young age, Tenley developed an eye for design and photography, which carried her through to 2016, when she graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. With a Bachelor’s of Science degree, she studied Entrepreneurial Science – seeing the importance in not only art, but also the business-aspect that intertwines the two.

After traveling around the Rocky Mountains from 2016 to 2017, Tenley landed in Aspen. In 2018, she joined Engel & Völkers Real Estate, and soon after became an extremely important member of the staff; her creative application from her experience as a graphic designer, photographer, and branding consultant, earned her the role of Marketing & Design Director. Her ability to create eye-catching collateral and develop target marketing strategies for E&V’s clients to achieve top dollar for their product is invaluable. You can contact Tenley for info on obtaining photos at [email protected].

In 2019 Sam had been a professional photographer for over 3 years. She had made the decision to return to college to earn her Associates Degree in Professional Photography.

Along with capturing the images of the CWWR, Sam also was the official photographer for the 2018 Maverick Stampede College Finals, 2018 CSHSRA High School/Jr High School Finals, Cokeville Barrel Race, and Barrel 4 Bucks along with others.

Along with the passion for photography, Sam has a passion for horses. Sam states, “Owning my own ranch and competing in rodeo events in the past have helped me in my career as a rodeo photographer. I have a strong drive to get the best photograph in all events. I also feel strongly that every contestant deserves to have a quality photo of their run.”

Thank you Cody!! Cody had been photographing the rodeo for several years before she became our official photographers. She was kind enough the first half of the 2015 rodeo season to serve as a guest photographer.

Cody grew up in a rodeo family and is helping her daughter Bailey with a new barrel horse prospect. Bailey won the Junior Barrels season buckle two years ago.

Cody explains her love for ranching and photography – “As a Documentary photographer, I give the viewer a glimpse into a lifestyle that is steeped in tradition and a passing way of life. A life of simplicity, a world filled with integrity, compassion, and beautiful moments, that I have the privilege of living. I capture the heart of the cowboy, a heart that time has not changed. I transport the audience to a place where a celebration of this organic culture with their connection to the horse, earth, and tradition is better understood. I feel a desire to show the world these images in an effort to preserve this fading way of life. The culture that helps feed the world.”

Cody lives with husband Travis and her family on a local ranch, where she can be found with her camera slung across her shoulder, horseback and looking for that shot that portrays the ranching culture.

Cody is currently working on a project photographing and documenting ranch women. Cody was selected in 2015 as one of the one hundred photography students for the Eddie Adams workshop that was held in New York state in October 2015. Students will be taught by photography professionals. The workshop website states, “The Eddie Adams Workshop is an intense four-day gathering of the top photography professionals, along with 100 carefully selected students. The photography workshop is tuition-free, and the students are chosen based on the merit of their portfolios.” Cody is a recent graduate of Colorado Mountain College.

See http://www.eddieadamsworkshop.com/ to learn more about the workshop Cody will be attending.

Carson Weller served as the CWWR photographer from June 4, 2015 to July 9, 2015. Carson has been involved in the rodeo over several years capturing the rodeo contestants on video and showing at venues such as the Pour House and The Black Nugget. Carson will be capturing the thrilling action of the rodeo both on video and still shots. Whether rodeo contestant or spectator you may find yourself on the CWWR website or facebook page. Carson’s photography will allow contestants and participants alike to re-live the action of the rodeo. Below you will find the history of Fuel Infected Films and contact information on how you can purchase a quality image for your keepsake collection. We will be posting videos to the CWWR website throughout the rodeo season.

Carson Weller writes about Fuel Infected Films

Fuel Infected Films was established in 2007, focused and dedicated to filming extreme sports. As the snow would melt every year we looked for more extreme sports to film during the summer. Bull riding was the first thing that came to mind. At that point we decided to start attending the rodeo every week. As the weeks continued more people grew interested in watching the rodeo at their own leisure, and were very supportive of someone recording weekly. We are entering our 6th season of recording the rodeo in full. This year we are also taking all the still photography. Our goal is to make sure that everyone big and small can enjoy the rodeo through pictures, video or in person. We are very excited for the up and coming rodeo season. Good luck everyone. We thank the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo for this opportunity.
